Harlequin

harleqinb

(Never liked the title but it stuck). This painting came from a moment to which I returned in the studio at Grays school of art as a student. I was walking home in a strong wind and felt hollow, empty and the wind went through me. A pleasant sensation of harmony or dissolving in the elements. Sailors may know this sensation. The painting was in my head in its entirety before I painted it and it took 2 days to paint. The figure is heroic, stoic, defiant and his demise is inevitable if it is slow in coming through his resistance. Refuge is in the distance in the cosy exposed cottage.
